Butterlies near the forest

Camping in the middle of the nature has a lot of gifts, like parting with the insects. Those may be unpleasant, like the insect bites on your arm and legs, but also beautiful, like a butterfly encounter. You see him first near your tent and if following things may happen. You only need space on the memory card (and the space is plenty).

In the forest

Going in the middle of the nature, even for a geeky event, I obviously couldn’t stop myself from going a few steps away in the forest and looking around. You will surely find little gems.

… now I am definitely NOT bold enough to tag those as “food” 😀

FLOSSCamp photos

While still on hold from substantial photo posting due to the lack of a suitable gallery to power the content, the recent FLOSSCamp at Curmătura Ștezii proved to be a great opportunity for a large number of good or great shots, so I have to work around ways and post some.

A (short) break

So far the image hosting on this blog was provided by flickr which I still consider from a technical point of view the best gallery software available. But with the recent deal about the Yahoo and Microsoft partnership and my solid stance to not give any money to the evil empire at Microsoft (either directly or indirectly), I will take a break from posting any new photo on flickr and think about the possible way forward.

As an unfortunate consequence, wile I am not sure about the hosting solution I will have to take a break from blogging photos too. It may take a while, the deal was expected for quite a while and for a long time I searched for a replacement with no success.

Firefox 3.5 release party and photos

So you are doing community stuff, being a speaker and helping with the organisation of a FLOSS event like the Firefox 3.5 Release Party, but at the same time you are a photographer, carrying the camera with you and shooting at every opportunity you get. The obvious result: some semi-candid cute environmental portraits.

Reflections

It may be completely unoriginal to play with reflections like this, but I couldn’t stop doing so:

Group photo at FUDCon

I am not entirely happy with how this group photo came up, but taking into consideration the constraints (no decent tripod available, bad light, crowded place), it may not be that bad after all…

Berlin

For a few days I am in Berlin for a Fedora (Linux) Conference, FUDCon, so I am using the opportunity to take a lot of photos. One of the first things to notice was the garbage on the street, seeing it I started to doubt my view on the street garbage in Bucharest

Street garbage in Berlin

I aslo encountered weird people on bikes, like you see on photo jokes from China:

But the bunnies in the huge park/forest near the Tegel airport weree absolutely amazing and unexpected:

And the open display of the hookers on street was somehow a new sight for a boy from Bucharest:

Fedora 11

a bit of utilitarian photography: we "launched" Fedora 11 in Romania: beer, geeky talks and even geek girls.

Booth babe me

So it’s life, you usually shoot both babes, but sometime the wheel is turning around and you are the "booth babe". Good thing I wasn’t caught in embarrassing posture with pantyshots or worse :p

eLiberatica 2009: selling Fedora

Being at the conference, I used the opportunity and tries some thematic portraits:

Beyond portraits: photomanipulation

I take seriously the freedom thing so my photos are never photoshoped, they are gimped instead :p So I used GIMP to touch the portrait I made the other day.

A first step was to play with the saturation, the initial colors are a bit too strong and the black and white is not bad at all:

Portrait: photomanipulation

Another interesting operation is to play with cropping and put in the spotlight what you think is the most interesting part of the picture:

Portrait: photomanipulation

And of course, unleash the gimping extravaganza going for a "glossy magazine cover" type of photography: heal the unwanted spots, soften the skin with selective gaussian blur, sharpen the eyes, lips and hair, other important details (the ring in this case) and, why not, alter the color of the eyes and lips. And stop here, while a bit of sanity is still preserved…

Store them all…

When shooting a lot of photos and finding hard to delete to much, you quickly build a massive amount and your drive fills up, so you have to increase the storage. This is what I did, by purchasing an external hard drive (USB), an Western Digital My Book Essential, which seems works very well on my Fedora desktop. The DVDs and the usb thumb drive are included in the photo for size comparison.

Fedora 10 Release Party

As announced on my main blog, we had yesterday a Fedora release party in Bucharest. Of course the photos I took the are nothing close to art, but it is fun (ALL the editing of my photos is made under Linux).

More beer

I dug up this photo from the older Brno FUDCon photo session, since I am not sure we will keep a Fedora Release Party next week in Bucharest.

No room left for a debate, that is not American Budweiser crap, is fine Czech Budweiser beer. Yummmmy….

FUDCon Day 3: The Beer

After a Fedora/Linux/FOSS conference noting is better than a fine Czech beer with your FOSS fellows. Bottoms up!
