Sexy Fedora T-shirt

In less of a couple of hours today is the release for Fedora 13 and specially for this event I am putting out a few sexy pics with a beautiful girl wearing the classic I <3 fedora T-shirt (stay tuned for the second part next week, when the shirt will come of!). Right from the bat, it should be noted Aneska is a professional model and I, the photographer, have the full rights to use the pictures.

And all is not about looks, she is quite a geek: doing photography and photo editing playing good computer games (Baldur’s Gate, if you can believe!) and also having heard what Linux is… it was easy for me to explain what Fedora is, by telling it is something similar with Ubuntu. Her boyfriend (yes, she has a boyfriend, I can hear now millions of geek hearts being broken and suddenly silenced), also photographer, knew Fedora by name (well… he knew it as “Fedora Core”, bad for me for not having a Live image with me) and have tried once Ubuntu on his desktop… he was unhappy with the software (troubles of installing proprietary nVidia drivers) but amazed by the helpful community (I owe now a beer to some unknown guy from the Romanian Ubuntu community).

We touched just briefly in the talk the topic about women and technology, their lack of involvement… I feel this is something worth revisiting at a later date, as she can provide useful insight on it – I expect a point of view radically different to the extremist hate groups driven by the USian politically correctness, prudity and hypocrisy.

Anyway, she will read the comments, being genuinely interested in the people feedback about this photoshoot, so please leave feedback in the comments, it will be read.

I also have to make today and exception from my rule, I believe in Freedom and use the CC-BY-SA license as much as I can, but in this case the rule is the photos can’t be used in a way that will damage the model image/reputation, so let’s consider them also under a “Non Derivatives” (ND) clause. However, she wants to see them used, so if you make a wallpaper from them, feel free to post a screenshot for her.

…and don’t forget to visit and pass forward the URL of the entire gallery. And wait for the second part, is hot.

Update: The second part is up.

Love under the blossoming trees

Warm spring evening in the Japanese Garden of Herastrau Park in Bucharest: the pink trees are in full blossom and under them young couples are carried away by the season, nature beauty and their love.

This couple is hugging like there’s no tomorrow:

love and blossom

This one is enjoying comfort:

And this one is joyful:

Well, what’s your stance on life? I for one would like to feel joy and be comfortable, but I know there is no tomorrow.

Spring at the Cernica forest

I pretty much borked this session: when you are in the process of being dumped and waiting for the final “official” notice about that, then you are far from working at 100% of your capacity. I know it could have been better, she deserve better.

First we started innocently, with smiles and wild cherry flowers:

Then went a bit more sexy, picking flowers:

And ended with a fantasy scene near the water:

The punishment

I was at the Cernica forest for a photo session and while our model, Irina, was changing clothes and updating makeup, the rest of us got a bit of spare time and started playing with the props. This gave me the opportunity to tell a story about sinners, punishment and redemption I wanted to say (the guys weren’t really aware what are they shooting for).

First I used Alina as standing-in for the “Goth girl” and for a very direct approach I played the “sinner”:

punishment

Still, I feel more comfortable behind the camera, so keeping Alina as standing-in for the “Goth girl”, Adrian moved as standing-in for the “sinner”, I like better the visual experience this way.

Finally, the sinner is put out of his misery in this cold and impersonal crop:

No hands photography

I can shot with no hands and there is the proof. Sure, the framing is really bad (in this position you can’t see the viewfinder) and the focus is not good either, but that is beside the point.

The spring sun

The sun in spring is nice and much awaited (of course, when the rain does not destroy everything) and even if your camera manual say is dangerous to direct the lenses directly to the sunlight, so can’t abstain from doing so and trying some dramatic backlit pictures.

Waiting for sakura

Even if I expect it to be a failure, I can’t stop following the cherry blossom season and take the best pictures I can, even if they are not the pictures I wanted. And this season is now, so I started on Friday, when, before the Easter mini-holiday I had a short day at work, by then they were ready but still not in flower:

sakura

Then I returned on Saturday, when the first flower started to show, not enough but a little step forward:

And again on Sunday, when it was really close:

But after that the weather changed, Monday was dark and cold, under an imminent rain, Tuesday it rained all day and today is a bit better, still not hot enough. Not sure If this weather change is bad, ruining the season or will help me keeping the flowers until the next week-end. We’ll see.

Sakura FAIL

Yoshiro cherry trees (染井吉野) ready to blossom, probably in a couple of days, and yet another FAIL for me, I am caught on the wrong foot and it looks like yet another time I will miss the opportunity of getting the photos that scream in my head for years and come, at best, with some soulless photos, just like the last year

Ziua Eliberarii Documentelor / Document Freedom Day

This was an interesting photojournalism project: for Document Freedom Day do a series of photos in front of a number of Public Administration buildings with the message “Nu va putem citi documentele! / We can’t read your documents!”:

Vintage FAIL

Hmmm… it looks like I need a new FAIL category in this blog… yesterday evening I had a meeting with some friends from the RLUG community and as all those meetings are best organised around some beers, we went to a pub called Bordello in the Old city of Bucharest (and this is the topic of my post here).

Long story short, the pub is called like that because in the XIX century in its place was a bordello, as the entire neighborhood used to be a light district (destroyed in a fire, rebuilt and such). And to keep the theme, the walls are decorated with vintage erotic photography, which awakened my interest as a photographer: now I think it would be an interesting photography exercise to take in this day some photos that will look like those. And this is going to be yet another source of frustration for me, thus the “FAIL” category, since is not going to be easy to implement.

Basically, those photos are not hard, what you need is logistics:

  • first you need a plumpy model… not fat, just with a bit more meat on her bones, to fit the beauty standards of the era. And good luck finding a plumpy model with enough confidence to pose;
  • then you need some old fashioned clothing, like the sheath your grandma used to wear… this is not as hard as it looks, use the “less is more” approach and you can get the job done with any piece of cloth;
  • accessories: feathers, beads, fans, etc.;
  • background is harder: an old looking chair, maybe a drawer, a bed with baldaquin;
  • for the lighting setup I would have to do a bit of study, but it should not be hard, the photographers of the era didn’t have expensive equipment;
  • the photos should be very soft, slightly unfocused, but not with shallow depth of field. So maybe take them softer directly from the camera or just go sharp and blur it a bit in post-processing, a trivial task;
  • again, in post-processing turn the colors in sepia tones, another easy task.

Sarmale FAIL

Leaving the tourism fair I felt a bit hungry and as I was hurrying to another fair (photos from the weddings fair to be posted later) I stopped and tried some sarmale maramureșene (sarmale from Maramures) with high hopes, it was quite a while since I had some sarmale I really liked.

sarmale

I don’t know, maybe in Maramures the recipe is different from what I was used to, but I didn’t find them extraordinary in any way: I couldn’t find the taste of summer savory or smoked bacon but the taste of onion was quite strong and the meat not boiled enough. FAIL. Even if the presentation was okaish, with the lady clothed like that, with the big boiling cauldron and the large mamaliga.
sarmale

Won’t try again any time soon (and won’t try to prepare myself some better ones any time soon, you won’t get good results by preparing a serving for one person).

Problem solving, blonde style

OK, I acknowledge that, I am an engineer so I work and think as an engineer most of the time, so apply the same style of work to any problem that needs solving (even if it is not a problem supposed to be solved as an engineer). However, this week-end at the tourism fair I had the opportunity to witness the blonde style of problem-solving.

It seems they (the blondes) approach the problem just the same way us (engineers) are supposed to do it too, by reading the manual (well, we engineers most of the time think we are smart enough do we don’t need the manuals any more, but know it would be the sane thing to do):

blondes solving problems

Then they all get together trying to do some stuff:
blondes solving problems

Then the chief blonde (I think she is the chief, she wad the one reading stuff) seems to conclude: girl! (that must be read as the Romanian “fată…”) I think that was not the good book, it had pictures of something else…
blondes solving problems

Eventually the problem got away, not sure if it was solved by our blondes or by an engineer passing by.

Note: girls, please do not feel offended by my (bad) attempt at humor, I think you are beautiful, otherwise I did have not wasted the time here.
