35×35: Shallow

With a 35mm lens, how shallow the depth of field can be? Quite a bit!

PS: my first tree blossom of the year

Blossom

I just had to put a picture with the tree blossom. Sorry if this bores you.

Hanami

Yesterday the Japanese cherry tree blossom (sakura) was probably at its best for this season in Bucharest: lots of flowers, beautiful sunlight, warm weather – anything you wanted from it.

And if everything was perfect, people were there watching and enjoying (Hanami is the traditional Japanese custom of viewing the tree blossom).

Sweet testing

Today I picked my lens (“the normalizer”, if you are curious which one) from the shop, where it was taken for calibration. The light at the shop was not good enough, so I postponed any serious testing for the following day, but on my way home I passed by this window, so I had to take a “test” (night shot, hand held camera, trough a glass window):

Freezing cold

At -9°C is way far from the worst keen frost I saw, but believe me, is a really cold morning in this end-of-year day, witness the ice powder on those trees. I want, no, I need warmth. Now.

Last rose? Yes.

It was an incredibly warm November so far (it won’t last, according with he forecast) so I had a last opportunity for a sunny morning with a lone rose in my garden.

Of bees and flowers

The last breath of the flowers, I had the opportunity to capture some classic close-ups with bees, which was a good opportunity, a first test of the macro capabilities of my new lens.

Waiting for sakura

Even if I expect it to be a failure, I can’t stop following the cherry blossom season and take the best pictures I can, even if they are not the pictures I wanted. And this season is now, so I started on Friday, when, before the Easter mini-holiday I had a short day at work, by then they were ready but still not in flower:

Then I returned on Saturday, when the first flower started to show, not enough but a little step forward:

And again on Sunday, when it was really close:

But after that the weather changed, Monday was dark and cold, under an imminent rain, Tuesday it rained all day and today is a bit better, still not hot enough. Not sure If this weather change is bad, ruining the season or will help me keeping the flowers until the next week-end. We’ll see.

Sakura FAIL

Yoshiro cherry trees (染井吉野) ready to blossom, probably in a couple of days, and yet another FAIL for me, I am caught on the wrong foot and it looks like yet another time I will miss the opportunity of getting the photos that scream in my head for years and come, at best, with some soulless photos, just like the last year

Spring in the city

Saturday I was out in the city for a photojournalism project (more about it next week) and passed near the Cismigiu Park and noticed how the spring has come: not only short, transparent skirts but also flowers and bees. Stopped for a short while (couldn’t let the rest of the team wait for me) and took a shoot of the later.

The firebug and the chicory flower

Morning after morning I pass near that shaded chicory flower and wonder about taking a better shot, but today it was a little different: a firebug (Romanian: Vaca Domnului) was walking around, offering me the opportunity for a different take (yeah, in the backgrounds are blue chicory flowers and the fence is making difficult for me to shot them).
