Huntin’

Ever since I got The Sniper I wanted to go hunt squirrels, but things happened, I was either busy or down so postponed it again and again, until the last week-end, when despite the improper weather, I got some work done. So, introducing Mr. Squirrel of Herastrau Park once again:

squirrel squirrel squirrel

Now indulge me for some Romanian language, I remembered an old joke, which I won’t bother to translate (but for the gist of it, bere = beer, veverita = squirrel ~= beaver in slang)

Veverita vs Bere

O bere este mereu umeda. Veverita trebuie încurajata.
1 punct pt. bere.

O bere nu-i placuta atunci cind este calda.
1 punct pt. veverita.

O bere inghetata te satisface.
1 punct pt. bere.

Daca gasesti un fir de par intre dinti, band bere, poate sa te apuce vomatul.
1 punct pt. veverita.

Daca te intorci acasa si puti a bere, nevasta-ta te cearta.
Daca te intorci acasa si puti a veverita, nevasta-ta ar putea sa te lase.
1 punct pt. bere, 1 punct pt. veverita.

1 punct pt. bere.

Berea nu are o mama.
1 punct pt. bere.

PUNCTAJ FINAL: BEREA BATE VEVERITA (11-10)

Daca esti o femeie si in momentul asta te superi, sa stii ca berea nu ar fi avut nimic de zis pierzand aceasta confruntare: un alt punct pentru bere.

So, here is some beer:

Basketball

The kids are playing basketball in the back of a community center in Tîrgoviște… so many years ago I used to play the game (both basketball and football) in the court of the school in my neighborhood… fun times! In fact what we needed was a ball, a little open space and some play companions.

Paștele Cailor at Tîrgoviște

I was familiar with the expression “Paștele Cailor”, meaning “Horse’s Easter”, as a date when nothing will happen (as in, for example, I will such Bill Gates dick at Horses Easter) and also knew a couple of explanations for it. This year I learned another one in a photography trip with Orasul.ro: is a festivity of the small Bulgarian community in the City of Tîrgoviște, happening after the winter when the horsed are taken out for the first time. It is also called “Tudorița”.

So together with a bunch of other photographers I attended the event this year, which, of course was pretty much about horses:

pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And it was also about the people in that Bulgarian community and their traditions:
pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And, as we are in Balkans, it was also about food (don’t remember the name of those small breads decorated with pepper seeds):
pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And of course it was about contests, to see who has the best horses and who is the best driver:
pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And it was a lot about local divas, sitting and smiling in the carts, in their pretty and colorful costumes, for all of us to admire:
pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And of course it was a festivity for the kids to enjoy (“give me the camera to take a picture to daddy” said the little princess):
pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And not last, it was a festivity for us, the photographers, who were there in great numbers trying to capture everything:
pastele cailor/tudorita pastele cailor/tudorita

And on top of all, it was a really beautiful hot and sunny spring day, a pleasure to be outside.

Wide in Brussels

Over the week-end I was in Brussels for the FOSDEM conference, as part of the Fedora team, the perfect opportunity to take my wide lens with me and take a lot of travel photos.

So of course there were building, cathedrals, monuments and so:

brussels

And there were cool stores, anime, comic books and so forth:

And plenty of good Belgian beer, at Delirium and not only:

And there was specific food:

Of course the chocolate was not missing, but this time was no chocolate:

Many more photos are dumped in a quickly made gallery.

Misery

It was about the time for me to choose the next week topic for Project 9449, so I started developing ideas, the first of them was “Misery”, then “Season of Joy” and a few others, but then I got a better one (to be announced at the right time). Since I had “Misery” on a corner of my mind and also a potential implementation for it, when I saw the opportunity on the street I shoot it. It also helped those days I feel myself a lot like this hobo…

The season of what?

The season of joy? Yes, it came, the city lights were turned on a couple of days ago. However… don’t expect much joy this Christmas… it definitely be a lonely one.

The season of joy

season season

The city administration is preparing for the winter holidays, I can only look with a bitter smile, looking forward to what I expect to be, from a personal point of view, a strong candidate for the saddest season ever.

Adventures in Piatra

Over the last week-end I was in a trip to Piatra Neamț, if I recall correctly it was my first time in that city. The trip was planned long before so I went, even if I was too sad for it (being hit by the thing called “life”).

It was not all drinking, I took some photos too, but between the before mentioned sadness and still lacking lenses the results are far from great.

There was a statue of Fane Babanu’:

I also saw a poster with one of the scariest foods ever (didn’t dare to try it):

Zurich

A few days in Zurich for FUDCon, I was on the conference most of the time but still caught a few moments in the city, doing some photography. Unfortunately, not having my lens, they didn’t came as I wanted and I didn’t took so many… didn’t got the time yet for editing, just dumped some of them in a small gallery.

Flyers

I know this is a stupid thing to to, but when previewing the series on the LCD of my camera I noticed the continuity, so I had to assemble it in an animated GIF:

This was an interesting photojournalism project: for Document Freedom Day do a series of photos in front of a number of Public Administration buildings with the message “Nu va putem citi documentele! / We can’t read your documents!”:

Spring in the city

Saturday I was out in the city for a photojournalism project (more about it next week) and passed near the Cismigiu Park and noticed how the spring has come: not only short, transparent skirts but also flowers and bees. Stopped for a short while (couldn’t let the rest of the team wait for me) and took a shoot of the later.

Mărțișoare 2010

Even if I think Mărțișor if a shitty useless and overcommercialized tradition, every year I go shooting, as the opportunity is too good to pass. This year the Peasant Museum held again a big fair, but the weather today was really uncooperative: clouds, rain, cold. Still, people were on duty.
