Bucharest in black and white 2012

Last year I had a picture there, this year one of my pics was selected again for the “Bucharest in black and white” (Bucureștiul în alb și negru) photo exhibition, which should open on October 17 at Cărturești, near Piața Romană. It was taken earlier this year at Femei pe Mătăsari.

Again, the same rule is for the image format, 4:3, which I wonder about, it is the image format for compact cameras: is one of the exhibition heavyweights too lazy to crop his pictures or is an opening for newbies still using compacts? (a newbie may not know how to crop, while you have better expectation from someone with a bigger camera).

Skin in black and white

I like colors, like them a lot, rarely do black and white photos (at least when I am not required by an exibition), so enjoy this exception:

Bucharest in black and white

Today is the opening of the “Bucharest in black and white” (Bucureștiul în alb și negru) photo gallery, where I qualified with one picture, the one below. Is open until the end of the month, so come and see us at Cărturești:

While black and white is not exactly my thing, I have adjusted myself to follow the rules, And also had to adjust the framing, while I usually do 3:2, the rules here were 4:3 or 1:1, so unusual color space, unusual framing. Hope I didn’t sucked too much.

Swans. In black and white.

The white swans are symbol for what swan stand for: grace, purity, delicacy… and black are original, unusual, exotic. So I guess it was a good idea to have both types in the Cismigiu Park. An unusual +1 for the people in charge.

Beyond portraits: photomanipulation

I take seriously the freedom thing so my photos are never photoshoped, they are gimped instead :p So I used GIMP to touch the portrait I made the other day.

A first step was to play with the saturation, the initial colors are a bit too strong and the black and white is not bad at all:

Another interesting operation is to play with cropping and put in the spotlight what you think is the most interesting part of the picture:

And of course, unleash the gimping extravaganza going for a "glossy magazine cover" type of photography: heal the unwanted spots, soften the skin with selective gaussian blur, sharpen the eyes, lips and hair, other important details (the ring in this case) and, why not, alter the color of the eyes and lips. And stop here, while a bit of sanity is still preserved…
