WLMRO bragging time

The winners of the Wiki Loves Monuments photography contest are announced today, time for me to take a deep breath, rest and then brag a bit 😀

From the almost 5800 submitted pictures, the jury made a short selection of 284 “finalists”, pictures considered the best and worthy of a closer evaluation. Despite my notices and warnings, the other members of the jury selected a few of my own submissions among those finalists (as an organizer and jury member, I could not receive any prizes, but couldn’t abstain from contributing). And again despite my notices and warnings, they noted my photos (I disqualified them to be fair, giving my notes as ZERO) and, even with one of the 3 jury members noting them “0”, they are not the last in the list.

Bunt enough talk, here are the pics:

Published…. Expo Ideal Mariaj 2011

A few of my photos from the Expo Ideal Mariaj wedding fair in January 2011 are published on their website, complete with the URL of this blog 🙂 6 photos in total, covering the fair floor and presentations, a bit of photojournalism:

9449 kilometers

My friend talked me into joining this project called 9449 kilometers (the title is the distance from Caracas, Venezuela to Bucharest, Romania) where we choose a topic, take each other a photo and put the results side by side. We just started the project, last week the topic was “office supplies” (but we evolved it in “notes”), this week was “stairs”, next week is supposed to be “alone” and so forth. Enjoy.

Vote for Carmen

Carmen is a beautiful model and I was fortunate to work with her a couple of times in the past, now she needs a vote. Below are a few of my photos with her, but on the vote page there are some you will probably like more (they are more revealing 😀 – I bet you’ll like those!)

Let me try to encourage my readers: if you vote for her and if she wins, I promise to post more photos from the sets below, so what are you waiting for? Go now and vote for Carmen.

Help Mihaita fulfill his dream

This call for donations is made on behalf of my beautiful model Irina, she is the sister of this unfortunate boy in need of help. Here is an excerpt from the donations website:

Letter from Mihai

My name is Mihai Popescu, I am 15 years old and I am from Ramnicu-Valcea, Romania. I am diagnosed with cerebral palsy with brain trauma, a disease that has affected my walking since my first years of life. Although I had 8 surgical operations along with 13 anesthesia and physical recovery at different medical centers across the country (Oradea, Targoviste, Sibiu, Bucuresti, Techirghiol, Ramnicu-Valcea) throughout 14 years of my life, I have never been able to walk unsustained. However, I am a student in 8th grade at ‘Anton Pann’ School in Ramnicu-Valcea in a NORMAL class. I have always wanted to be like my classmates, to be able to run, to play together, not to depend on my mother nor on anybody else. I’ve fought so far even though the surgeries have been painful, as well as the recovery and I don’t want to give up now when I have another chance to hope that I will become a normal boy at last. Please help me fulfill my dream now that I have a chance!

So, it this was convincing enough, spare a couple of minutes and help with a donation, it will be appreciated.

Thank you.

10by10by10: Support LGM2010!

The Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM) is the annual working conference for free software graphics application users and developers. The fifth edition takes place 27-30 May 2010 in Brussels, Belgium. Teams from GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Scribus, Hugin, Open Font Library and many other graphics projects gather to improve their software and discuss new ideas for interoperability and shared standards.

LGM2010 has launched a fundraising campaign called 10by10by10 to raise $10,000 USD from grants, $10K from corporations and $10K from the community. The funds raised from granting organizations, public, and corporate partners will allow participants who have no other means of sponsoring their travel to Brussels to attend the event.

Please contribute to the community campaign at: http://pledgie.com/campaigns/8926

All donations are tax deductible for US taxpayers. For larger donations from corporations and individuals, you can contact us directly at lgm AT gnome DOT org

Note: I have proposed a talk there titled Desiging with Free tools in an Open Community: experiences from the Fedora Design Team

Printing photos

I don’t print photos, almost everything I did so far with photography far was for online use only, do I don’t own (and don’t plan to buy) a photo printer. But exceptionally, for a small project, I needed some prints (about 50 photos), so went to the nearest shop (like 5 minutes from my office) with the photos on an USB stick.

Much to my disappointment I was told: “sorry, our USB reader does not work, come again next week”. FTW? Waste a CD for that? I don’t feel like doing that… And I learned from my co-workers this happen often. How hard is to have a working USB port on the computer? Or maybe I got to talk with the stupidest guy on the planet?

Conclusion: if you live in Bucharest, try to avoid Nic Classic if you have something to print.
