Down the stairs

Down the stairs, up the stairs, the geometry looks good.

Trough the water

The weather is getting really hot, so staying in the middle of the water becomes an attractive proposal. For the humans, not for their electronic equipment, of course.

Hipster paradise

The city of Bucharest just added a new hipster paradise, is a new Cărturești book store where one can just hang and feel cool. In the first days after its opening the place was swarming with the curious.

Basarab bridge

I had the opportunity to take some pictures of the Basarab Bridge in Bucharest just a few moments after sunset.

New National Library building

This week the building for the National Library opened in Bucharest, it has a long story: the construction started back under the communist regime and it was supposed to be ready by 1990, but the 1989 revolution put a pause (or even a stop) on many of those Communist building plans, for a lot of reasons, some more legitimate, some less.
Time passed the the almost ready building started to degrade, there were rumours some greedy people got hold of it and will change its destination, the government lacks the money for for big investments, the country (and the world’s) economy is in really bad shape…
But at least the building is done, it was opened and is used, as initially intended, for the National Library. Is even better: it won’t be that ugly building that was originally projected, now it has steel, more glass and lights, is looking like a modern building.
This week was the official opening, a good opportunity to take a few pictures. Also a good time to learn is not all roses: they have a severe lack of funds, employ only about a quarter of needed people, so the working hours are severely affected, not all the halls are open yet, not all the archive was moved yet… they still have more work to do and an accute need for funding.

Passing trough Lipscani

It seems I can’t pass trough the old city of Bucharest and keep myself from taking photos, especially in such beautiful light, right before the sunset. Here are a couple of details: a street light and a balcony.

Dracula’s Backyard

In the Chindia ruins complex, past the old church there is another church, a smaller one, with a graveyard on the side. As the castle was ruled, among other voivods, by Vlad Dracul (Drăculea) and his son, Vlad Țepeș (the Impaler, the famous Dracula), I like to call it Dracula’s Backyard, since for sure it was the backyard of the two Vlads.

Now, I wonder, those graves… is something happening there at midnight?

The ruins of Tîrgoviște

Being in Tîrgoviște for Tudorița/Paștele Cailor, couldn’t miss the ruins of the voivodal palace there (last time when I visited it, it was… back then in primary school). It made me a bit sad for hot having my sword handy… but since it is a museum, they would have not allowed me anyway.

There is the old church, with old painting on its walls:

Wide in Brussels

Over the week-end I was in Brussels for the FOSDEM conference, as part of the Fedora team, the perfect opportunity to take my wide lens with me and take a lot of travel photos.

So of course there were building, cathedrals, monuments and so:

And there were cool stores, anime, comic books and so forth:

And plenty of good Belgian beer, at Delirium and not only:

And there was specific food:

Of course the chocolate was not missing, but this time was no chocolate:

Many more photos are dumped in a quickly made gallery.

Inertia + Glass = …

These days I am so low, that I continue to exist and function mostly from inertia… and how the plan to buy some new glass was made long ago, when I had the money for it I followed the inertia and got it. At a focal range of 11-16 mm, it is something one would call ultra-wide and all can say is the world seen trough it is different.

Still, people who know me know my interest in cold buildings or landscapes (strong points for such a camera) is limited, my heart is to photos with people and it will allow for interesting effects, like perspective deformation, impossibly long legs, shooting someone head-to-toes from maybe 1 meter away and such so obviously need to play with it. The problem is… right now I don’t want to be around people, except one single, special person, who do everything to keep me away. Inertia got me stuck to a wall.

The St. Michael cathedral

Seeing the St. Michael cathedral in Brussels, it was the first time when I had the opportunity to visit a Gothic cathedral and, the raging atheist I am, I was impressed by it: the architecture, the majesty, the stained glass.
